The lifeline of any voluntary organisation depends on having a vibrant youth section and St John Ambulance, Cork City, is no different. Members of the youth section are known as cadets. The Cork City Ambulance Cadet Division was set up to teach first aid to the youth of cork. We meet weekly on Saturday evening between 7.30 and 9pm and learn basic first aid skills as well as more advanced skills such as ambulance aid. Members are aged between 10 and 17 years of age. We currently have over 30 members. First Aid courses are held annually in September and comprise of one night a week over 7 weeks. Upon successful completion of this course you will have the option of joining the division. Members who join in the Cadet Division have a proud history of going on to be lifelong members of the organisation. Competitions are used to give cadets the opportunity of using their skills and knowledge to treat "casualties". A great deal of effort is involved in making fake wounds look as realistic as possible. Competitions are held locally, as well as in Dublin, Limerick and Northern Ireland. There are both team and individual competitions. In each, members have to help victims of simulated accidents. Competitions are held in both caring and first aid. The aim of competitions is to give competitors the confidence in their ability to use the skills and techniques they have learned. The holding of regular competitions also helps members of the Cork City division to mingle with counterparts from Limerick, Dublin and Northern Ireland. There is an excellent mix of work and play within the Cadet divisions. This is recognised by the officers in charge as essential in maintaining membership. To facilitate this, events such as the Christmas Social, Cadet Disco, Weekend Camp are organised annually. During the latter, cadets get to try Rock Climbing, Kayaking, Canoeing, Orienteering and Pier Diving. If you choose to join us you will have the chance to put your skills to work by assisting our adult members with patient treatment at major events we cover such as matches in Pairc Uí Chaoimh; Pairc Uí Rinn; Turners Cross and Musgrave Park as well as concerts, equestrian events, motocross, parades, marathons etc. Our more senior cadets have the opportunity to assist with patient treatment and transport to local hospitals in our state of the art ambulance fleet. They also travel to Dublin and Limerick for big matches and concerts in Thomond Park, Landsdowne Road, Croke Park and the RDS.
